Why the multi-genre writing project? This project will enhance your research and writing abilities while allowing you to explore a topic of personal interest. However, you will be writing more than the traditional research paper; the multi-genre approach allows you to present your understanding of the topic across several genres. What is a genre? A genre is simply a type of writing that has particular form, content, or style. See the
handout “Here is a partial list of genres” for some examples. Here is a partial list of genres.doc
Audience for this project: You are writing for a general audience – they have no specialized knowledge about your topic. Therefore, you need to think about how much the average person knows about your topic before using lots of specialized vocabulary.
Purpose for this project: To inform (and entertain?) a general audience about your topic, but in an in-depth manner by writing about your topic across multiple genres.
Research Tips:
• keep your Key Question out so you know what information you need
• use your note cards to paraphrase and quote only important information

• give your project in interesting title and make the key research question your subtitle - see examples above

• explain how your key research question binds your project together
• include any background information you think the reader might need to know
Genre Introductions (separate page)
• list and explain the characteristics of each of your chosen genres (four total)
For example, the genre of historical fiction includes:
o Occurs during an important period in history
o Shows historical events
o Lets you experience what it might have been like to be there
o Major events are real, but some characters and minor events are made up
• for each genre answer the question: How did this genre help me explain my topic?
• for example: if your topic is iPosds, you might use the product review genre to identify the pros and cons of the product
• 500 word minimum
• note: you are not limited to the genres listed on the handout for Genre #2,3, and 4

• open to your imagination
Epilogue
• explain what you have learned from this project
• explain how your perspective has changed on your topic
• indicate what you hope people might have learned by reading your project
